Pantry Organization Made Easy

Pantry Organization Ideas

Proper pantry organization is important as it can halt the waste – because a cluttered and messy pantry can add up to a lot of waste in terms of money, time and food.

You may end up making an unnecessary trip to the grocery to purchase something you actually already have if you can’t find what you need. Follow these pantry organization ideas to get things organized and the clutter under control.

Additionally, an incorrectly organized pantry can cause perishables and canned goods to spoil more quickly. In this article, we will discuss some smart ideas and tips to help you get your pantry decluttered and organized.

Start By Emptying The Pantry

It may appear like a lot of effort, the only way to organize your pantry is to empty it out. Remove everythigh, read the pull dates and toss anything that’s gone bad or reasonably past pull dates and sort the rest into categories (read more on that later).

Clean the shelves with a hand vacuum or wipe the shelves clean. If necessary and finish up by lining them to protect them and make cleaning easier the next time around, paint them if you need to.

Before you place items back on the shelves, sort them into categories such as breakfast cereals, canned goods, baking goods, bottled juices, coffee, tea and so on.

You should also organize items such as canned goods into sub-categories, such as canned fruit, soups, canned veggies, noodles, etc. This makes it easier to find what you need.

Tip: It is important to put your newest items to the back of the shelf, behind other like items, leaving your oldest dated items to the front, to be sure that you use up your food by the pull date. This is what the people who stock store shelves, such as at the grocery store do.pantry organization

Make Your Pantry Accessible

When you replace your items on your shelves, think things out. What do you use the most?  Also consider who will need which items.

Place items you use frequently where you can reach them easily. Place canned and bottled goods on lower shelves.

It’s a good idea to put your baking goods and your spices close together, then you don;t have to hunt around. Eye level or a little lower is nice for these.

You can save yourself a lot of time and your kids a lot of trouble by placing snack foods on a lower shelf so that they will be easy to reach.

Put the items you rarely use on higher shelves or in marked storage containers so that you can spot them easily.

Pantry Organizers

You can get a lot more space out of the same space, if you use the proper pantry organizers. It usually will get more things in the amount of space you are trying to use.

A can rack organizer  makes it easy to see cans, while using less space. When you pull one out, the next can rolls to the front. This pantry organizer idea is a big help.

Bins of the right sizes make great pantry organizers as they can help you utilize your vertical space on your shelves. Label each bin as to the contents or use a color coding system (e.g. red for fruits, green for veggies, orange for pet food, etc. )

Baskets are good in making the most of all the space you have. Keeping light or oddly shaped items like chips and noodles in baskets allows you to see what you have on hand and keeps random bags from making a mess in you pantry. This is what I do with my noodles. They stay upright and don’t spill this way.

Large plastic totes that have lids are also helpful for keeping large, oddly shaped, heavier items organized. This is is a great pantry organizer to keep bags of rice, beans and flour.

These totes also come in very handy for storing “extra” items when you take advantage of discount sales. There’s no reason to have a dozen cans of string beans taking up extra space on your shelves. Tuck them into a covered bin on the floor below your shelves until you need them, writing on the top of the can what they are with a marker.

Using a pantry door organizer helps you get even get more in your pantry. A Pantry door organizer will let you use all the wasted space to store small boxes, jars, cans and spices. Many have adjustable shelves.

Do invest in cupboard organizing tools to help you get all you can out of your space. Placing lazy-susans in corners is a great way to take advantage of that space and prevent stray items from drifting into the corner and staying there. You can also place small items like spices on lazy-susans for easy reach.

Stock Your Pantry Wisely

Remember to keep your pantry stocked by keeping an ongoing list. You don’t always have to wait until you need a staple food item to purchase it. That attitude defeats the purpose of keeping a well organized pantry.

Think about the items you use regularly and strive to always have an extra. Purchase two (or more) next time you go to the store if you usually use one can of beans in a week. Add that item to your list to stock up next time you go to the grocery when you see that you have only one or two cans left.
